Roman Home Decorating
- 1). Paint the walls of the room a neutral color, like beige, off-white or a slightly golden shade. To achieve the marble effect, which is common in Roman decorating, purchase wallpaper with a marble pattern for an affordable way to give the room a royal touch. Roman decor is not particularly brightly colored; the material and quality of the furniture pieces are the focus.
- 2). Use patterned tile for the floor of the room if you're building the area from the ground up -- the tile should be in different shades of brown or tan. If the room is already built, use a large area rug that looks like patterned tile.
- 3). Attach Roman blinds to the windows, also in a neutral shade, such as bronze or a medium green color. Roman blinds can also be attached to the windows from the outside to bring more attention to the room even before guests enter the house.
- 4). Set up columns in the corners of the room; these represent the columns that are an integral part of Roman buildings. Use a group of three columns of varying sizes painted white or gray to accent the space or select columns made of marble to put against the walls.
- 5). Use lush green Roman plants like ivy, a leaf used in Roman mythology to crown the heads of the gods, to give a sophisticated burst of color to the room. Pot the ivy (real or synthetic) in gold pots to keep the neutral color theme in the space while bringing attention to the plants. Place the pots on top of some of the columns.
- 6). Place mini replicas of Roman busts on some of the columns to give the room the feel of an affluent Roman home or museum.
- 7). Add a table to the room that has column-like legs and a glass top. A small ivy or bust centerpiece can be placed on the table as well.
- 8). Include furniture like a lectus (sofa or day bed) in the room. Roman decor is devoid of clutter, so excessive furniture pieces are not needed in the room. The lectus has an arm on one side, sometimes both; a tall headboard; and a wooden frame and legs.
- 9). Accent the lectus with plush throw pillows in tan, green or gold.
