How to Design Your Bedding
- 1). Choose a color scheme for your bedding. "Home" magazine recommends that you pick a relaxing monochromatic or neutral scheme that will encourage a good night's sleep. Make sure that the bedding color scheme compliments your wall color. For a monochromatic scheme, pick different shades of the same colors, like tan, brown and cream or several shades of blue. For a brighter contrasting scheme, use colors from opposite sides of the color wheel and ground them with a neutral.
- 2). Pick a comforter or duvet in your color scheme. Consider choosing both a light coverlet for summer use and a heavier down-filled comforter for winter. You could also pick a brighter color for summer than for winter.
- 3). Choose sheets. The sheets should be in a color that compliments your color scheme. Sheets also give you the opportunity to add pattern to your bedding design. According to "Home" magazine, you should feel the sheets before you purchase them to be sure that you like the texture and softness.
- 4). Add pillows. Start with the pillows that you will sleep on. These pillows should be in pillow cases that match your sheet set. Then add two large pillows that match your comforter. Finally, use one or two accent pillows to add pops of color, texture and pattern to your bedding. Consider beaded pillows, a pillow with an initial monogram or patterned pillows that compliment your comforter or duvet.
- 5). Layer fabrics. Layering fabrics will give your bedding texture and style. Add a throw or blanket at the foot of the bed in a texture, color or pattern that compliments your comforter or duvet. A silk or linen throw may work better for summer, while a heavier knit throw can be used for winter.
