    Math with Dice

    • Divide the students into groups of three or four. Give each group of students a set of red dice and a set of white dice. Distribute a set of game cards for each group of students (see Resources). Instruct the students to take turns rolling all four dice. The numbers on the red dice must be added together, and multiplied by the sum of the numbers on the two white dice. The students can then cross the answer off of their game cards. For example, if the sum of the red dice is 5 and the sum of the white dice is 8, then the students can cross the number 40 off of their game cards. The first group that crosses every number off of their game cards wins.

    Chalkboard Graph

    • Students can create a classroom graph to represent their interests. Draw a large L on the board. Instruct one student to label the point where the two lines of the L connect with a zero. Add numbers going upward until you reach the total number of students in the classroom. Ask for another student volunteer, and have her write three to six possible student interests across the bottom of the L. These interests must follow a theme, such as favorite animal, color or subject in school. Send one student around the classroom to keep track of each child's vote for their favorite interest. Have yet another student use these results to create bars that show how many students like each interest. For example, if five students like cats the best, a bar would go upward above the word "cats" until it reaches the number 5. Ask the students questions about the bar graph after it has been created. Questions may include "Which animal was the most popular," or "How many more students liked history than science?"

    Clothesline Math

    • Divide the students into groups of three or four. Hang a clothesline up for each group of students. Write a different number on 10 blank note cards. The numbers you choose depends on the age of the students. Younger students may have numbers 1 through 20, while older students may have numbers that range from .005 to 100.5. You will need a set of 10 number cards for each group. When you say "Go," students must race to hang the number cards on the clothesline with clothespins. The cards must be in order from largest to smallest, or smallest to largest (whichever you call out). The group that correctly hangs all 10 cards first wins.

    Checkbook Math

    • Assign each student in the classroom a job for the month. Jobs may include washing the chalkboard, taking out the garbage at the end of the day or passing out papers. Pay each student in pretend money at the end of each week if the job was completed. Instruct the students to deposit the money in your bank and record the amount deposited in a checking-account ledger. Charge students a fee for bad behavior in class, or for turning in assignments late. They must deduct this amount from their checkbooks. Consider charging the children once per month with a desk rental fee, and make taxes due once each quarter. At the end of the month, you can set up a shop for children to purchase items with the money they have left in their accounts. Other options include having the children set aside some money for a savings account, and paying the students who go above and beyond their jobs with a bonus.
