Where Should I Put Decorative Shelves on a Large Wall?

    Plate Rail

    • If the shelving will be added to a dining area, installing a plate rail would blend in nicely with the room's function. Plate rails are often made of clear knot-free wood, such as oak or maple. They are typically installed about one to two feet from the ceiling. These shelves have a groove near the front edge. Dinner plates or souvenir plates are leaned against the wall behind the front edge and their lower rims rest in the groove; preventing them from sliding off and breaking.

If the shelving will be installed in a family or game room, you could display sporting trophies, your vintage beer cans or other collectibles.

    Staggered Placement

    • If your wall is wide, you could install a series of shorter shelves at progressively lower heights. In a living room or great room, you could display small antiques, curios, framed photos and the like. The shelves might be glass or wood, grooved or flat. With a variety of shelf heights you have the flexibility of displaying taller items. Glass shelving is heavy. If glass is your choice, make sure the brackets are attached to wall studs with long screws. Don't use plate glass for shelving, use tempered safety glass instead.

    Between Windows

    • If your wall has a pair of matching windows with wall space between them; you could install several shelves that span the distance. Spaced at equal intervals, they would be an ideal location for shelving books. Another option might be to keep the center of the wall open and install a matched set of corner shelves at each end.

    More Options

    • For a more contemporary look, a group of shelving cubes could be installed. You might arrange them in a checkerboard layout, or in separate groupings of three or four cubes each. The cubes provide shelf space both within and atop them. If your furnishings are craftsman style, you could carry this look onto your wall with a pair of craftsman inspired wooden shelving units. If your shelf needs are in your kitchen, a French style country shelving unit might lend a European inspired accent to an otherwise barren space.
