Watch Pinoy Pride 25: Nietes Vs Fuentes Live Stream
Filipino champion Donnie Nietes tilted his head upwards and gave his tall and rangy Mexican challenger Moises Fuentes a menacing glare yesterday as the two made the weight for their World Boxing Organization light-flyweight title fight set tonight at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
Nietes, standing just 5-2, hardly blinked when he engaged Fuentes in the customary staredown following the official weighin, drawing oohs from the sizable crowd that endured the searing noontime heat at a makeshift stage at the MOA.
Fuentes, 28, had given him a rough and tough time the first time they rumbled in March last year in Cebu City as their bout ended on a controversial majority draw. Fuentes claims that Nietes was lucky to keep the WBO 108-lb crown that night but insists that he will present Nietes' head when he returns to Mexico next week.
Ring magazine also announced on their website a few days ago that this fight will also be for the linear world light flyweight title. This makes this rematch of the more significant matches in the division's history. Their first encounter in Cebu last year ended in a majority draw.
Milan €Metodico' Melindo, the WBO International flyweight titlist, and Martin €Diablo€ Tecuapetla of Mexico weighed in at an identical 111 lbs.
Rey €BoomBoom' Bautista and Sergio €El Cuate€ Villanueva of Mexico also were an identical 130 lbs for their non-title contest. For the undercards: Mark €Magnifico' Magsayo (124lbs) will face Hyuk-tak Joo (122lbs) of South Korea. Joseph Von Minoza (140lbs) will fight another South Korean, Sung-tak Joo (139lbs).
Rounding up this blockbuster promotion are Reymi Castellano Aleye of Cuba, who served as Nonito Donaire's sparring partner in Cebu, will see action against Warren Mambuanag, Mark €Machete' Bernaldez will face substitute Marvin Tampus and the event will be opened by the four rounder between JK Elorde and Jeffrey Garcia.
Attending the event was Mexican boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera. Supervising the weigh-in were the GAB officials and WBO Asia-Pacifc chief Leon Panoncillo.
Filipino world champion Donnie Nietes and Mexican Moises Fuentes will both go for a knockout when they clash Saturday night in the mainer of Pinoy Pride 25 at Mall of Asia Arena. Fight day for Pinoy Pride XXV: The Rematch for Glory is on May 10 at the MOA Arena. Fight time is at 6PM.
The chief support pits Milan Melindo against Mexican Martin Tecuapetla for the WBO international flyweight title. Both checked in at 111 lb. Rey €Boom Boom€ Bautista, coming out of a brief retirement, tangles with Mexican Sergio Villanueva at 130 lb in the card.
