How to Share an Internet Connection Between a Laptop and a Desktop

    • 1). Connect the Internet modem cable from the wall jack to the back of the Internet modem. For cable modem or fiber optic, the Internet modem cable is a coaxial cable. For DSL, the cable is a standard phone line.

    • 2). Connect an Ethernet cable from the back of the Internet modem to the port labeled "WAN" on the back of the router.

    • 3). Connect an Ethernet cable from the laptop to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router. Repeat this step with the desktop.

    • 4). Turn on the Internet modem, then then on the router.
