- 1). Evaluate your dog for symptoms of pythorax. Dogs that suffer from this condition may experience trouble breathing and become lethargic. They may also have a decrease in appetite and gums may appear blue in color.
- 2). Transport your canine to the animal hospital immediately. Take your dog to the closest vet or animal hospital. Getting your dog medical attention quickly will increase chances of recovery. Make sure to keep him calm in the car to minimize further complications.
- 3). Create a treatment plan with your dog’s vet. Your canine’s vet may need to remove excess fluids present in your dog’s chest cavity. Intravenous fluids will be provided accompanied by antibiotics to get ride of the infection.
- 4). Administer medication as directed. A dog that suffers from pyothorax may need to be on antibiotics for a couple months. Make sure to administer the entire prescription even if your canine starts to feel better.
- 5). Monitor your dog closely. When your canine is recovering he will need to be monitored closely. Listen to his breathing carefully and report any signs of rapid or strained breathing to his doctor immediately.
