If It"s Your Birthday in March, Why Not Take a Look at Your Birthstones?
There has been a long tradition of assigning gemstones to birth and planetary influences, and whether or not you believe in this, it does tend to make a nice theme for giving birthday presents of jewellery incorporating the chosen stones! Over the centuries, from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, to the Indian system of Ayurveda, certain stones and gems were thought to reflect the nature of any person or indeed animals or plants born under the influence of a particular planet.
Therefore it is now the turn of the month of March, and the main sign, which is Pisces, the fish.
Gems connected with this sign include amethyst and aquamarine.
Other stones include turquoise, pearl, rose quartz and bloodstone.
Amethyst is a very popular gemstone, hard and durable and thus good in fashion jewellery.
It is considered by crystal healers to change negative energy into positive energy.
Turquoise has been thought to warn the wearer of danger or illness by changing colour.
In the 13th century, turquoise was thought to protect the wearer from falling, especially from horses.
Turquoise is also believed to bring happiness and good fortune to all.
It's said that turquoise attracts healing spirits, making it a premier healing stone.
Believed to be a protective stone, turquoise is worn to guard against violence and accidents.
Turquoise is also a valuable amulet for travellers.
Aquamarine is as the name suggests, associated with blue and the sea and was once believed to be the treasure of mermaids! It is the stone for the 19th anniversary and is believed to assist travel sickness and help those with phobias of flying and spiders.
Rose quartz is known as the Love Stone.
It is a pretty pink feminine stone which has associations with self-knowledge and is said to lift depression.
A favourite of mine, it is said to allow you to get to know your true self and to be accepting of what you find! Often it is worn as a pendant on a fine chain or necklace.
Pearls are a perennial favourite and were known as 'Angel's Tears' by the Greeks, who began their association with weddings and bridal gifts.
pearl drop earrings are a beautiful gift, and of course they are wonderful in necklaces and bracelets.
Most pearls on the market today are synthetically made, which is good in that the buyer is secure in the knowledge that they have not been taken from a Coral Reef or similar endangered sea area.
Bloodstone is also called heliotrope.
It's a dark green stone with flecks of red jasper, and is said to be a gentle healing, balancing and energizing stone, especially associated with the heart and circulation.
It was the traditional birthstone for March until replaced by the more popular Aquamarine.
Many of the retailers featured on various websites, including our own, have these lovely stones made up into gorgeous jewellery gifts, take a look and treat yourself!
