Nursery Rhyme Dress Up Ideas for Girls
- Animals are featured in many nursery rhymes. You can create mice costumes, inspired by “Three Blind Mice,” by using gray sweatshirts or T-shirts and gray sports pants as the base and then adding ears made of a material such as felt. Accessorize the costume with a pair of lens-less or 3-D glasses and a walking stick or cane. For a “Three Little Kittens”-inspired outfit, you can purchase a kitten costume or create garments from materials such as fake fur. To add the necessary detail, the costume needs a pair of mittens, while the girl can carry a slice of pie on a plate, as per the rhyme.
- Nursery rhymes are also rich in characters that are connected to animals. For example, a “Little Bo Peep” costume consists of a rustic-looking dress or a top and flowery skirt. Combine these with a cardigan and hat, all in colors such as white, blue and pink. The Little Bo Peep character also needs a staff, which can be made from wood, while the girl can carry a toy sheep. A costume based on the titular character from “Mary Had A Little Lamb” is much the same as Little Bo Peep, but lose the staff and consider adding a basket of flowers instead.
- Some costumes for girls work best when combined with other outfits -- both for girls and boys -- as part of a group. For example, a Jill costume from “Jack and Jill” looks better if there’s a male companion to play Jack. A Jill outfit consists of ordinary clothes, such as a dress. The accessories are more important. Attach gauze to the girl’s head to represent the broken crown of the rhyme and complete the look by adding a bucket of water. The elderly lady from “Old Mother Hubbard” can be created with the aid of an old-fashioned dress combined with an apron or cardigan. Add a pair of black boots and a grey wig for the hair. Other kids can dress up as Hubbard’s children.
- The basis of an outfit based on the character from “Mary Mary Quite Contrary” is a casual dress. The girl should wear an apron over the top and carry a watering can as if gardening. A “Little Miss Muffet” costume is another simple outfit. All that’s needed is a dress and a bonnet or similar hat, alongside a snack bowl for the girl to carry. Add a toy spider to represent the contents of the nursery rhyme.
