Ideas for a December Birthday

    Warm Things Up

    • Give guests something unexpected by hosting a summer-themed birthday party. Rent an indoor pool if you can for a full-fledged summer party. If that's not possible, consider filling small wading pools with water in a heated garage or basement and pass out water guns. Water balloon tosses are another option. The party can take you to the tropics with leis, hula skirts and a luau or you can cover the floor with beige carpets for a beach party. Set out beach chairs and colorful umbrellas and fill wading pools with sand, pales and shovels. Turn the heater up so it feels like summer and serve barbecue, juicy fruits and colorful fruity drinks with little umbrellas in them.

    Let It Snow

    • Embrace the snow if you love the winter. Decorate with white, silver and topaz blue, which is December's birth stone. Hang paper snowflakes and twinkling white lights and sprinkle silver confetti around the party space. Serve shaved ice and hot chocolate in front of the fireplace. Invite guests to come dressed for the slopes if you live in an area with snow and go skiing, ice skating or sledding. If you can't actually be outside, encourage guests to keep their coats, mittens and scarves on by turning the heat off or lower than normal. Put together craft projects using Styrofoam balls or cotton to look like snow.

    Spring Time Cheer

    • String silk flowers around a room and hang posters of abundant gardens for a spring-time tea party. Send out invitations shaped like tea pots or mugs and request guests to come in their "Sunday best" for a formal tea party. Provide fancy princess dresses, boas, long gloves and other glamorous accessories if the birthday celebrant is a young girl who loves to play dress-up. Give each guest flower seeds, flower-shaped cookies or other floral-inspired gifts. Alternatively, exotic or unusual tea makes appropriate favors.

    Hibernation is Overrated

    • Take a cue from the winter animals who hibernate through the summer and pull an all-nighter instead. Serve all your favorite slumber party favorites and a few winter favorites as well. Hot cider, hot cocoa, peppermint sticks and cinnamon and sugar-covered goodies are some ideas. String white holiday lights all around the room and set up lamps or lanterns that give off low light. Include an abundance of blankets and pillows and the birthday celebrant's favorite movies to create a comfortable cave-like environment to spend your hibernation having fun instead of sleeping.
