Monkeys are mammals which belong to the order primate and are one of nearly two hundred primates having tails. The narrow chests and tails of monkeys distinguish them from apes. Most of the species of monkeys live in tropical forests; monkeys are found in abundance in many parts of India.

Monkeys have a varied relationship with humans. Monkeys are kept as pets for fun as well as being used for experiments in laboratories. Monkeys are sometimes also considered as a threat to agricultural production as they may harm the crops and are therefore strictly taken care of. However, in tourist destinations, monkeys have become habituated to human presence and are considered as being "man-friendly" while in others, there have been reports of monkeys attacking tourists and taking away their food and belongings. In Pakistan and India, many people use monkeys to earn a living. Monkeys are taught to dance on a hand-held drum, when the drum is beaten, the monkey, with a cord tied to his neck dances on the beat of the drum.

Also, it is an old practice for humans to keep monkeys in zoos for the entertainment of adults and children and pose an interesting and amusing site for visitors. The fruit banana is associated with monkeys and it is considered that monkeys are very fond of bananas; hence, visitors to zoos often come packed with loads of bananas to appease the monkeys in return.

The use of monkeys in laboratories is controversial as many believe that it is a cruel practice which produces little information of value while others claim that it is a worthy practice and has led to major breakthroughs such as the rabies vaccine et cetera and that the prevention of harm to humans should be a higher priority versus the possible harm done to monkeys.

Academically, monkeys are considered in the humourous sense, being considered as witty and possessing a sharp brain and imitating, often ridiculing, humans in their actions.
