- 1). Get a smart phone that has an infrared port and touch screen, such as most Blackberry phones and some iPhones. A smart phone generally costs between $120 to $250 as of 2011.
- 2). Pick universal remote control software that works on your phone. Some brands that you might consider include VITO Remote 4.0, RedEye or NoviiRemote, between $60 and $175 as of March, 2011.
- 3). Download and install the software to your computer. Click on the file, and it will ask if you want to install it. Click "Yes" and "Next" and wait for the application to install. When it notifies you that it is finished, restart your computer.
- 4). Plug your phone into your computer using the USB cable or syncing cradle that came with it when you bought it.
- 5). Go to your "Start Menu" and go to "Programs." Open up your phone software, and click "File" and then "Synchronize Devices." This will install the remote control program to your phone.
- 6). Remove your phone from the USB cable or cradle once the installation is complete.
- 7). Go to your phone's program menu and find the remote control application and open it. Select the "Options" tab and select "Setup Remote." Choose "TV" from the list of available devices that can be synchronized.
- 8). Find the TV remote and point it at your phone's infrared port. Press and hold down the power key on the remote. This will cause the remote control and the phone to synchronize. If you can't find the TV remote, then call the manufacturer or find the remote control code in your television's user manual. Type the remote control code number for your television into the "Remote Code" box on your mobile phone application. Press the "OK" button on your phone to activate the function.
- 9). Press a button on your phone's interface to change channels, control the volume, or turn the phone off. When the remote control application is activated, your phone's screen will look just like a remote control.
