A Natural Flea Killer for an Apartment
- Kill the fleas in your apartment's carpet by sprinkling table salt liberally over it. Before adding the salt, remove small, washable rugs off the carpet and launder as you normally would on the hottest water temperature allowed for the rugs. After you have covered the carpet with table salt, work it into the carpet fibers by scrubbing with a broom. Let the salt sit on the carpeting overnight. As the fleas eat the salt, they will become dehydrated and die. Unfortunately, salt only kills adult fleas and does not harm flea larva. Repeat this process every three days. When using salt on carpets, keep your pets out of the room. The salt will dry out their paw pads.
- Eucalyptus repels fleas infesting your home and your pet. Unfortunately, eucalyptus can be dangerous to both dogs and cats if ingested. Tear eucalyptus leaves in half and place 1/2 cup of the leaves in a slow cooker. Add 2 cups of olive oil and cover with the lid. Allow the ingredients to simmer on low heat for six hours. Secure a piece of cheesecloth with a rubber band over the mouth of a glass jar. Carefully pour the mixture over the cheesecloth into the jar. The cheesecloth works as a filter and separates the eucalyptus oil from the leaves. Let the oil cool in the jar for several hours before bathing your flea-infested dog in the oil.
The oil will also remove fleas from washable items. Launder your pet's bedding as you normally would, adding five drops of the eucalyptus oil to the rinse cycle. - Sprinkling diatomaceous soil in your yard will prevent flea larva from pupating. Diatomaceous soil contains tiny sharp edges, which do not harm people, pets or children, that will tear the flea larva as it crawls through the soil. The damaged larva cannot pupate into adult fleas. Diatomaceous soil is available at garden centers and home-improvement stores.
- A natural way to keep fleas off of your pets is with apple cider vinegar. By adding the vinegar to your pet's drinking water, you will make their skin more acidic and discourage flea infestation. Alternatively, give your pet garlic pills for the same effect. Before giving your pet any type of supplements, consult a veterinarian. Bathing your pet with white vinegar also will make your pet's skin and fur inhospitable to fleas.
