About Carpet Wax

    Types

    • There are three different ways to remove wax from carpeting: ice, scraping or melting. Typically, it's best to try one at a time to see which will work best. If you're working with a large candle wax spill, test a small area first to see which type of removal provides the best results.

    Features

    • Each type of candle wax removal has its own features, and each are quite easy. There are only a few steps for each type of removal. For example, if you want to freeze off the wax, place a plastic bag of ice cubes over the wax once it has reached room temperature and then scrape it off. If you'd rather use heat, place a brown paper bag over the wax spill and run an iron that is set at medium over the bag.

    Effects

    • There may be some wax left over on the carpeting, no matter which of the three methods you use. If this is the case, remove as much as possible (at room temperature) with a vacuum and then scrape off what is left with a blunt knife. If you have leftover wax die in your carpet, try ironing out the oils using the paper bag method. Blot the surface frequently to get up as much of the wax and the wax die as possible.

    Warnings

    • It is not always possible to get up all of the wax, particularly if you are trying to remove a large spill. There are ways to minimize the appearance of leftover wax, though. Get some rubbing alcohol and clean rags, then blot the area until the wax or wax die is no longer obvious. Do not rub too vigorously, or you will damage the carpeting and will be able to tell where you tried to clean the wax.

    Considerations

    • It is not impossible to use candles on a carpeted area, so long as they are placed in proper candleholders. To prevent wax spills on carpeting, do not burn the candle for too long. You can also prevent wax spills by allowing the candle to come to room temperature once it has been blown out before moving it to a new location. Like anything else that involves an open flame, it is very important to enforce safety standards at all times and never leave a candle unattended.
