How to Lock a Fifth Wheel
- 1). Line up the vehicle with the trailer so you can reverse the vehicle directly on to the trailer hitch. Park the vehicle. Drop the height of the trailer between 1/2 inch to 1 inch below the head of the fifth wheel. This ensures the kingpin can fit into the hitch head, at which point the locking bar will lower.
- 2). Reverse the vehicle back toward the trailer until the kingpin is secure inside the hitch. Close the safety latch on the fifth wheel. Attach the electric cable plug from the trailer to plug socket on the fifth wheel; so the brake lights and indicators will work on the trailer. Connect the safety cable.
- 3). Lift the landing gear an inch or so from the floor --- do not raise it entirely at this point. Return to the vehicle and drive forward slowly. Park the vehicle and check the connection between the trailer and the fifth wheel. If the trailer has disconnected and fallen onto its landing gear, begin the coupling process again. If not, raise the landing gear fully and test your trailer lights are functioning correctly.
