Everyone needs to know how to stop a panic attack on the spot, as soon as it begins to come on.
The faster you recognize what is about to happen, the more likely you are to stop it from developing into a full blown attack.
What you don't want to do is sense the attack coming on and tense up out of fear or anxiety.
It is very easy to do this because the episodes are so uncomfortable, but you will not be able to prevent it from happening if you respond in this manner.
If you are in a public place and are scared of what will happen if others see you go through this, try to step away to a more private place so you can focus on controlling your response.
The first step to bring the episode to a stop is to mentally focus on something less stressful.
If there is something around you that may be causing the anxiety, then turn away from it or close your eyes.
Sit down where you are comfortable and focus your mind on something more pleasurable.
It's a good idea to have a peaceful image or scenery in mind before you get into this situation, so it is easier to pull up the thought and focus.
Next, take slow deep breathes and feel your body relax with each exhale.
Focus on relaxing every inch of your body and keep your mind focused away from whatever the source of anxiety may be, if you know what it is.
There are a lot of breathing techniques that are great for this purpose, so it's a great idea to become familiar with them right away.
Until then, go with slow, deep breaths.
It can be quite difficult for some people to stop a panic attack after it has already began, so try to catch the sensation of it coming over you before it has completely taken over.
