How to Clean a Fan

To Dismantle the Fan

1. Start by taking off the front casing (wire frame). This means unscrewing or unsnapping the thing that's holding it onto the rest of the fan.

2. After that, find whatever is securing the blades, which is often a knob, but sometimes one or several screws. In some cases you can unscrew this by turning the knob until it comes off, but other times you will need to unscrew it with a screw-driver.

3. After you unscrew whatever is fixing the blades to the fan, you should pull the blades off the fan. If you cannot pull it off, check that you have removed everything that's holding the blades on. Also, be sure to pull the blades by the center, rather than the blades, or you will break them.

4. On certain personal fans, you can also remove the back casing by unscrewing a knob similar to the one that held on the blades.

To Clean It

1. Use a rag to get the dust off of all the different parts of the fan you've pulled off, making sure to get the front and backs and insides.

2. If your feeling really clean, you can put the different parts of the fan you detached into warm soapy water.

3. After soaking, rinse the parts.

4. You should then set the parts out to air dry.

5. While you let the parts air-dry, find a paint-brush, and use it to wipe away any dirt that got into the tight spots of the fan. While you do this, make sure you try to get as much dust from the motor as you can. This will extend the life of your fan.

6. Finally, as you put your fan back together, make sure its the same as when you pulled it apart. Otherwise, the fan could malfunction and be a hazard to your safety.

Washing doesn't have to be a thing you do every week. If you dust the fan, and thoroughly wash it every 2 weeks, or just every month, your personal fan will be kept clean. The less dirt and grime you allow to stay on your fan, the longer it will last, so don't neglect what needs to be done!
