How to Trap a Live Mouse
Setting up bait
Many trappers prefer to use grain as bait for mice because the rodents are ultimate granivores. The best grain that one can use for bait is wheat germ, which will attract the mice like crazy. Mixing the wheat germ with a little peanut butter will do the job nicely and will make the bait stick on surfaces.
Types of traps
There are two types of traps when it comes to live trapping mice. You can use commercial traps that you can buy in hardware stores. You can choose one with a two-way cage that has a platform. The doors will close when the platform is triggered to tilt. Place the grain and peanut butter bait on the platform so the mice will tip it when it reaches for the yummy bait.
You can also use a home-made trap for live trapping. You will need a container and a method for the mouse to get inside it. A vase or milkcan can be used for this purpose. Put the grain and peanut butter bait inside the container then place the container near any place or anything that a mouse can climb on. When the rodent drops inside the container, it won't be able to get out of it. Just make sure that your container is tall enough for this and that the mouse you are trying to catch is still small.
Getting rid of the mice
After catching mice, you need to figure out what to do with it. Driving to the next neighborhood and dumping the mice there can get you into trouble if it's against state laws for rodent control Toronto.
Another alternative is to use them as food for snakes and owls. Give the mice to a friend who owns snakes. If there are owls in your backyard, you can just leave the trapped mice outside and wait for the owls to get it.
What's important is to ensure that the mice don't return to your home. You can do this via exclusion. If your home has accessible entry points (vents, decks, exhaust pipes), then it is best to seal these up or use effective high-gauge barriers. Â
