    • As a fourth generation Toyota pickup truck, the 1985 4x4s represent the last batch of U.S. Hilux model trucks before the design conversion to the Tacoma model the next year. The 1985 truck contributed strongly to Toyota's reputation of reliability long after the mid-mark of 100,000 miles. The proof of its indestructible nature was shown comically on the British TV Show, "Top Gear," where multiple attempts were made to destroy the truck, including putting it in a collapsing, 10-story building. The truck still started up after each attempt.

    Engine Design

    • The 1985 truck model 4x4 came with two different engine designs. Both engines were first installed in the 1983 models. The 22R used a carburetor and the 22R-E introduced the use of fuel injection to the truck line. The 22R engine produced 96 hp at 4,800 rpm and torque was 129 foot-pounds at 2,800 rpm. The 1985 22R-E engine produced 105 hp at 4,800 rpm and a torque of 140 foot-pounds at 2,800 rpm.

    Diesel Engine Option

    • Diesel engine options came in the form of the 2L and the 2L-T engines, which incorporated a turbo-charge design. The diesel was discontinued the following year due to consumer preference for cheaper gasoline.

    Body and Transmission

    • The general body size of the 1985 4x4 was 174.6 inches in length and 66.5 inches in width. Cargo capacity topped out at 700 pounds and the gas tank carried a smidgen over 17 gallons. In 1985, a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission became available. The 4x4 model also came with a five-speed manual transmission. Towing capacity reached a modest 3,500 pounds with a V-6 engine.
