Impact of Legislation on Scope of Practice Among CRNAs

Conclusions

This research was conducted to address the lack of quantitative information regarding SOP among nurse anesthetists in the literature. Through the development and validation of a novel tool to allow the practitioner to measure their own SOP through the use of a VAS, multiple aspects of SOP could be considered simultaneously for a more accurate and comprehensive picture. This study represents the first time that a VAS has been used to measure SOP. Its validation and use among other advanced practice specialties are encouraged as an outlet for further study.

This research highlights that CRNAs in opt-out states are experiencing changes in their practice as a result of policy modifications, leading to a more broad scope. This is a positive step in meeting the access to care challenges that our system faces with the implementation of the ACA. All APNs will face these opportunities for professional growth because providers are being asked to practice in a cost-conscious and efficient manner. Using all APNs to the fullest extent of their education and training is not only recommended by the IOM, but it is also an essential change that is necessary to ensure continued access to quality care for all health care consumers. Measuring the practice of APNs quantitatively brings a new perspective and dimension to the way researchers can compare practice patterns nationwide and longitudinally. The changing practice patterns uncovered in this study are not likely limited to the anesthesia specialty. Further study among other groups of APNs is encouraged to identify the impact of the location of practice and ongoing legislative changes.
