What is the IETF and RFC and what does it mean to IT
Starting at the very beginning the IETF originally came into practice some years ago. The idea behind it was to offer a way of developing standards of the internet. Even though many of us started out internet journey through the 1990's when the computers were huge eBay hadn't become so over populated and Google was just another search engine. Today's generation through the 2000's are having a wonderful time and I am sure that you can thank IETF and RFC for a certain amount of it, if not a major part. Unknown to many IETF was originally launched at the beginning of 1986 and judging by recent technology it has obviously come on in leaps and bounds.
I am just one of many that is very impressed with the technology provided to us today!
It promotes the best ever services whenever possible with the theory that the internet should be something that everyone should be able to understand without it being overcomplicated. If this hadn't happened we wouldn't have so many of us today that have self taught themselves without needing assistance from third parties. Computers can be expensive enough without having to cover tutor costs on top of it.
It is a voluntary organisation literally anyone can join and is made to feel extremely welcome. A network designer for example would be made to feel very important and could contribute vastly to what the company wants to achieve.
This is where the RFC comes into practice if you like you could say they are in charge. It's a discussion form that sets to work on ideas generated through the IETF. They also look into past ideas and if needed suggest ways of improvement. It then heads back to the IETF to check on what has been said at the RFC and take the appropriate action.
Just think about it this is how accepted material becomes widespread on the internet.
