"Shopaholic" – No Laughing Matter

101 17
A shopaholic is a person who is a compulsive shopper! Although there may be some men who can be categorized as a shopaholic, this addiction is normally related to women! A shopaholic does not know how to stop shopping; she often buys clothes and other things for herself even if she does not use or need them! Shopaholics shop in secret; they buy things and try to store them without allowing anyone in their household to be aware of their purchases.

There are several reasons why a person may become a "Shopaholic". The addiction of a shopaholic goes deeper than what meets the eye! Very often, one of those reasons could be loneliness! Shopping becomes the "new best friend" to some who are fighting with loneliness. Shopping makes the time go faster and helps to take away the pain of being alone; there is no time to deal with loneliness when a "shopaholic" is busy shopping!

Some people who have difficulty dealing with emotional issues may find comfort in shopping. Shopping becomes a temporary "quick fix" to the problem/problems at hand! A shopaholic who uses credit cards to shop will eventually face a drained bank account! Just like a drug addict who will do anything to get hold of drugs, a shopaholic may even go to the extent of stealing money to continue shopping or shoplift to satisfy her shopping addiction! At this stage, it is a clear sign that the addiction has gone way out of hand!

A shopaholic who has low self-esteem buys clothes, shoes and other items to boost up her self-esteem. If a shopaholic has a weight issue, she will buy clothes that are a size smaller in the hope that it will encourage her to lose weight! Some shopaholics may have had financial difficulties when growing up; being deprived of the good things in life as a child can cause the person to become a shopaholic as an adult!

Unfortunately, sales personnel who work on a commission basis do not help shopaholics recover from their addiction! In fact, "shopaholics" are easy targets for sales personnel; the shopaholic will buy everything and anything that is suggested to them!

An addiction to shopping is just as serious as an addiction to alcohol or drugs! If you are a shopaholic or if you know of someone who fits this description, it is time to do something to stop this addiction. There is nothing to be ashamed of because it can be dealt with just as there is hope for someone who is addicted to alcohol or drugs. The first thing is to admit this addiction! Speaking to a counsellor is a good start to help resolve the problem! You will be surprised to realize that when the real problem is being dealt with (the problem is normally associated with an emotional void or pain); the addiction to shopping will eventually dwindle! Do not allow this addiction to control your life; being a shopaholic is no laughing matter!
