How to Get a CDL Class B Permit
- 1). Study for and learn the general knowledge questions required to pass your state CDL exam. Either choose a CDL class B course at a well-known tractor trailer training school, obtain sets of practice questions from a reputable source, or study for the exam using a CDL test book obtained through your library or book store. There are several published, most notably the 2010 edition of Barron's "How to Prepare for the CDL (Commerical Truck Driver's Exam)."
- 2). Go to your state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and sign up to take the class B license exam. They will issue a test that includes multiple choice and true/false questions that pertain to driving light duty trucks. Complete and pass this test with a score of 80 percent or higher.
- 3). Sign up to take the skills portion of the CDL class B exam at your local DMV. This involves performing a pre-trip inspection on the light duty truck, and a hands-on skills test where you drive the light duty truck with an instructor. Pass this test to receive your endorsement.
