    Individual Policies

    • Premiums for individual health insurance plans vary widely based on policy specifications, age, gender, medical history and geography. While many of these factors are beyond the control of applicants, policy features may be customized and manipulated to better suit the needs and available budget of the individual. Broadly speaking, the average premium paid for individual health policies was more than $200 per month in 2006-2007, and plans purchased often had limited benefits lacking comprehensive care.

    Family Coverage

    • According to an article in USA Today, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported that the average premium for family health insurance coverage increased by more than 5 percent in 2009 to more than $1,100 per month. The figure underscores the recent rapid rise in health insurance premiums.

    Geographic Differences

    • Although surveys and statistical figures provide an indication of what the nation pays for health insurance, the numbers are misleading and cannot be used as a benchmark or gauge for determining appropriate pricing. Costs vary widely between regions of the nation, with residents of the north-eastern part of the country paying some of the highest premiums. People living in extremely rural areas of the Midwest enjoy dramatically lower prices, yet also earn less money and have a lower cost of living.
