Tips For Using Head Lice Treatments Properly & Effectively

It is time to start a head lice treatment as soon as you determine that your child has head lice.
In addition to treating the child's hair itself there are several other things to take care of.
Things that the child may have had contact with while infested may need treated as well.
The first step is treating the child's hair.
Several over the counter shampoos will kill lice, prescription shampoos, cream rinses and lotions may be available.
Follow the directions on the bottle exactly for proper treatment.
Most head lice shampoos must be applied to dry hair, then lathered in the shower ten minutes later to rinse.
The child's wet hair should then be combed through with a fine-toothed lice comb to remove the dead insects.
The lice treatment should be repeated in seven to ten days to kill any newly hatched nymphs from undetected eggs.
Lice do not survive long if they fall of of their host.
Some parts of your home and what your child has come in contact with will need to under go head lice treatments as well.
Strip the child's bed and wash the bedclothes in hot water.
Running linens through the hot cycle on your dryer will kill loose head lice.
Things like pillows can also be placed in the dryer if you do not want to clean them in the washing machine.
Unwashables like plush toys may be placed in an airtight bag for two weeks.
If it is cold outside items may be stored for two weeks in a cold place like a garage or shed.
If it is warm outside a deep freezer will suffice.
Hair care items such as combs, brushes, barrettes, pony tail holders, and head bands should be soaked in rubbing alcohol or disposed of.
If you have more than one child, but only one appears to be infested all children should undergo head lice treatment as if they are infested.
Lice have no wings and are incapable of flight, they cannot jump, but they can crawl.
Lice are spread from person to person through contact.
It is likely that the other children are infested, and have lice and nits that haven't been detected yet.
Lice must be taken seriously, if head lice treatments are not thoroughly executed in your home the lice will continue to thrive and turn into a whole-home infestation rather than nits and a few adult lice on one's hair.
Be diligent when it comes to head lice treatments.
Wash bedding every day and coats that are too time consuming for every day washing can be thrown into the dryer for 20 minutes every day.
Make sure girls wear their hair up during the day and do not allow your children to share any items that come into contact with their scalp.
