How to Tow a Truck With an Automatic Transmission

    • 1). Lift the back of the truck up and support with it a jack stand. Put the truck into neutral gear.

    • 2). Remove the nuts from the rear U-clamps using a wrench and store both clamps and nuts in a safe place. Detach the drive shaft. Use electrical tape to secure the bearings and caps to the underside of the truck.

    • 3). Strap up the rear drive shaft to the exhaust or another secure place using electrical tape. This will prevent it from scraping the ground as you tow the truck.

    • 4). Secure the truck to the tow dolly. Remove the jack stand and the truck is ready to be towed.
