Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a naturally produced hormone that forms in the brain by the pineal gland. It is regularly used as an alternative sleep remedy for individuals who are suffering from jet lag, insomnia and other conditions, including ADHD, epilepsy, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and sunburn. If used as a natural sleep remedy, adults should take between one to three milligrams of melatonin an hour before bedtime. Do not take a higher dosage without medical advice, as melatonin in high doses can cause further anxieties. Melatonin is sold in capsules, cream, lozenges and tablets, but it's best to consult your doctor before taking the supplement. Side effects can include decreased libido and sperm count, dizziness, headaches, irritability, male breast enlargement (gynecomastia) and stomach cramps. Pregnant women are advised not to take this product during pregnancy and breast feeding.
