1. Facebook was the most visited website and popular search term in the year 2011.
Like last year, facebook took the lead on the US charts, showing an increased number of visitors to the website, followed by Google.com and YouTube. This innovative idea is expected to be implemented next year by KLM, the Dutch Airline, where passengers will choose who as their travel companion. The process will require the passengers to provide either their Facebook or LinkedIn ID. The purpose would be to boost personal or professional interaction for the user, and of course, more money for KLM. The cost is expected to be high for this luxury, just as one would pay for advanced seat reservation. A flight experiment revealed a little less than the majority were inclined toward forming an intimate relationship with their companions or simply looking to while away their time pleasantly.
3. Youth prefer Facebook to voting
Politics is on the losing end when it comes to youth participation. Twice more 18-year-olds use Facebook than registering to vote. The 19-24 age groups are equally disinterested. The Electoral Commission decided to compete by using the social network to provide awareness and encourage teenagers, but attempts have so far failed, as some amount of unusual creativity will be required on their part to motivate the tech driven teenagers of today.

Facebook has just launched a helpline counseling service for Facebook users with suicidal tendencies. Anyone seeking help for themselves or a friend, can now speak directly and immediately to a counselor from the National Suicide Prevention organization through the Instant Messenger app, or post the link to the concerned person. This commendable service is currently available only in the US, and should expand as global platform that will, if not altogether prevent, but lower suicide rate.
5. Kidney donations via Facebook
Recent news of a kidney donor who volunteered to donate her kidney after seeing a request posted on Facebook Application Developers [http://www.avenuesocial.com/] by a user whose husband urgently required kidney transplant. The response has encouraged the use of other social networks to do the same. Now, there is greater hope out there for people with rare blood types or diseases seeking help: through family, friends and Facebook.
