When someone has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, one of the most important parts of their daily living is making sure that they keep their blood sugar levels under control.
For diabetics, blood sugar levels that spike can cause all kinds of problems.
For this reason, many diabetics are very careful about their diet because they want to avoid all the nasty side effects that can come along with their blood sugar constantly spiking and dipping.
Most foods that will help to lower blood sugar levels have some fat content.
Good fats can help to lower insulin resistance.
Certain kinds of nuts and avocados are good examples of foods with good fats.
They are very good snacks because they help to keep the hunger away due to their fat content.
Some other foods that are good for diabetics are:
  • cinnamon
  • garlic
  • onions, and
  • sweet potatoes
This is because they are all either high in antioxidants, high in fiber or have other properties which can help to regulate cholesterol.
As most people know, having a healthy cholesterol level is another important component for diabetic health.
Diabetics are greatly advised to eat a diet that is high in fiber.
Consuming raw fruits and vegetables is important.
For example, adding lemons to your meal would be a healthy addition because they are rich in vitamin C.
In fact, the acidity in lemons will help to decrease the glycemic index of other foods.
Some diabetics also choose to eat things such as organic cheeses and nut butters.
Cheese, berries and egg yolks are known to stabilize blood sugar.
Type 2 diabetics should also add more greens to their diet including things like spinach, kale, broccoli and even green beans.
Because these vegetables are non-starchy and high in fiber, they are ideal for someone who is having problems with swings in their blood sugar.
Fish is another important food in the life of a diabetic.
Try to consume fish such as tuna, salmon, and herring as the omega-3 fatty acids help to improve the body's response to insulin.
These fish also contain a mineral called selenium that helps to lower blood sugar.
Many diabetics also swear by green tea because it contains a lot of antioxidants and has been used to control blood sugar in the body for many, many years.
In addition, some people enjoy eating brown rice, cabbage, lean meats and lentils as a way of lowering their blood sugar.
