How to Prepare a Metal Surface for Polishing
- 1). Lay the closed cell foam on the worktable and secure the foam with masking tape. You can skip this step if your worktable has a wood surface.
- 2). Lay the uncoated metal on the surface of the worktable.
- 3). Smooth out scratches and blemishes on the surface of the metal with the 200-grit sandpaper. If you are preparing stainless steel, sand the metal with the grain of the metal.
- 4). Cut the scouring pad into a manageable size with a pair of scissors. The cut pieces of pad should fit comfortably into your hand.
- 5). Scour the surface of the metal with the cut pieces of scouring pad to smooth out the sanding marks left by the 200-grit sandpaper.
- 6). Spray the surface of the metal liberally with the metal cleaner and let the cleaner rest on the metal for the time recommended by the metal cleaner manufacturer.
- 7). Wipe the surface of the metal with clean rags to remove the metal cleaner, contaminants and sanding debris from the metal's surface to complete the metal polishing preparation.
