How do you go about accessorizing your home without having to pay through your nose? Accessories are an ideal way to spice up the decor without having to redo everything. Whether it's a new home or renovating an existing structure, dressing up the house to make it your home is an art.

There are plenty of accessories that can be used like Cushions, Photos, artwork, ornamental curtains, indoor plants, mirrors and area Rugs. This article is all about these little carpets and how to use them in the right way to add some interesting color and hues to your home.

Rugs come in a number of fibers and different type construction. There are basically 5 types of construction. The quality and price of a rug depends on its construction time and the talent of the weaver.

Flat Woven

Flat woven carpets are made by weaving vertical yarns (warps) through the horizontal yarns (wefts). These rugs do not have a pile and can be machine made or handmade.

Braided

They are similar to flat woven ones, and they too do not have a pile and are generally reversible. These carpets are made by braiding the fiber into a continuous rope and then sewing them together. Usually they are spiral, very strong and durable.

Hand Knotted

This is a labor intensive technique which requires the most amount of construction time. The quality depends on the skill and talent of the master weaver. Here, individual knots are tied over warp yarns right up to the length of the yarn to form the pile. The more the knots, the more durable and expensive the carpet becomes.

Tufted

They can be easily manufactured and are woven by pulling loops of yarn through the backing material. This can be done by hand or by machine. The loops are then cut or sheared to form smooth piles surface. These rugs can be quickly made and are generally inexpensive.

Hooked

This process is similar to tufting, only that the loops aren't cut. Here, intact loops form the pile; they can be both handmade or machine made.

Material

Though Rugs nowadays come in a number of materials, it's important to choose the right type, depending on the purpose, budget and the placement. Synthetic fibers like nylon and acrylic are cheaper and tend to wear out faster, whereas woolen ones age well. Silk is the most expensive natural fiber. Sisal, jute, coir and other grass fibers are natural but cheaper alternatives.

The Rules

The rules to choosing the perfect area rug for your space are quite contradictory and confusing. The idea is to choose one that suits your space the most.

The thing with legs on/off the rug: There is a rule that says that the front leg of your furniture should rest on the rug. This works most of the time. It basically separates one area of the room from the other. If you have a fairly large room you can put a small segment rug and a cozy chair with its front legs on the rug, in a quiet corner. This would seclude the corner from the rest of the room without actually cutting it off.

All the legs on the rug: Some places this principal holds well. It makes the room look pulled together. The trick is to figure out the placement of the furniture and the rug as well as the colors to make the room look impressive.

Mix the two: In some spaces it's best to mix the two rules with some furniture firmly placed on the rug and some with just the front legs on it. This helps define the boundary and gives a contrast with the flooring.

Inches of bare floor: The rule here is to leave around 18 inches of bare floor around the rug. Again depending on the area or space you intend to cover plays a major role. Sometimes even 6-12 inches work well. Some designers have also placed area rugs with one side against the wall, and the other sides have around 6-18 inches bare floor around it.

The best part about these rules is that they can be bent to suit your room and design features. There are beautifully decorated rooms that feature wall to wall Carpets. Generally while doing up bedrooms, the rug can be put at the foot of the bed with its ends around 6-12 inches beyond the bed. Area rugs can also be pleased in the seating area of a bedroom or with one third of it under the bed and around 18 inches out on either side.

Dining areas require rugs to extend around 24 inches around the table to accommodate all the chairs. Another approach is to have multiple seating arrangements in a large room with more than one area rug. Finally, covering all the walking areas is best.

To sum it up choose the right fiber, type, size and colors for your rugs, and artistically place them to make your home lively and winter-ready.
