What to Expect After Restylane

For years, Hollywood has been producing makeover shows that show all kinds of cosmetic procedures. Every season we are treated to plastic surgeons or dermatologists who tout the latest gels, creams, injections and peels.

One of the latest procedures for the face requires an injectable gel called Restalyne, which is the brand name for a solution made of hyaluronic acid. Essentially, Restalyne mimics the sugar compounds in the skin cells; these compounds diminish as we age. The skin cells slowly lose their ability to bind with water, which in turn keeps the skin plump and supple.

Why The Need For Skin Repair, And Brands Such As Restylane?

When skin loses water, it becomes thinner, looser, and droopier, since it becomes less resistant to gravity. The top layer of skin, the epidermis, is constantly sloughing off old skin. But it's the dermis (middle layer) that provides the skin's strength.

When this layer starts to lose collagen, elastin, and hyalauronic acid, the very foundation of the skin starts to weaken. Smoking, drinking and sunbathing can considerably speed up the process by which the skin loses its elasticity and youthful look.

The first and most visible signs of losing these components in the skin is drooping skin around the neck and eyes, wrinkles around the eyes, nose and mouth, and thinning of the lips.

What Can I Expect Immediately After Restylane?

Restylane is purportedly one of the easiest cosmetic procedures to have. A trained doctor puts the gel in a syringe, and injects the substance into laugh lines, scowls, marionette lines, or lips that a patient wants plumped up. Some doctors have the expertise to put Restylane under the eyes to make patients look younger, too.

Because it does not contain animal fats or components, Restylane does not typically cause the kind of allergic reactions that might occur with other fillers. There is, however, the probability that a patient will have some redness or swelling around the injected area for one to three days. It's important for the patient to avoid touching the area for several hours after the procedure, and to avoid the sun or cold weather activities for several days too.

There will probably be some bruising in the injected areas for several days to several weeks after the procedure. The doctor or RN will discuss what amount, if any, the patient can expect depending on the number of injections done.

What Can I Do to Avoid Any Problems?

Again, the risks are low for anything besides mild contact point irritation, but the doctor may tell the patient to avoid anything that could increase bruising or bleeding afterwards, like large amounts of vitamin E, alcohol or aspirin.

There is sometimes a little pain or tenderness where the needle goes into the skin, but this is minimized by the local anesthetic or numbing cream provided by the RN or doctor.

What Kind of End Results Can I Expect From Restylane?

Often the patient will notice rejuvenation in the face immediately. Again, the treated area might be a bit red or swollen, but these side effects will dissipate. The effects of Restylane are very long lasting when compared to other non-surgical facial enhancement procedures: six months to a year, depending on the color of the person's skin, age and sunscreen use.
