How to Fix a Moldy Blanket Smell
- 1). Take the blanket outside and brush off any surface mold or mildew with a dry cloth. Make sure that when you are brushing the mold or mildew off the wind does not blow it back onto you.
- 2). Set the washing machine to the hottest water temperature allowed for the blanket's fabric. When in doubt, use cold water to prevent shrinking or damage to the blanket.
- 3). Add 1/4 cup of liquid laundry detergent in the detergent receptacle. Pour the detergent directly into the washer drum if the washing machine does not have a receptacle specifically for detergent.
- 4). Pour 2 cups of distilled white vinegar directly into the water filling the washing machine drum. The white vinegar will safely kill any mold or mildew growing on the blanket while removing the unpleasant moldy smell.
- 5). Submerge the smelly blanket in the water, and close the washer lid. Let the machine run through the wash, rinse and spin cycles.
- 6). Remove the blanket from the washing machine immediately. Leaving the blanket in the washing machine for an extended period of time may cause mold and mildew growth.
- 7). Place the blanket in the dryer, and add one to two dryer sheets. Close the dryer door and tumble on low heat. Alternatively, hang the blanket outside in the sunlight and let dry for several hours.
