DIY Foot Stools
- 1). Choose a design for your footstool. You have several options for this project. One option is to create a footstool with crossed legs for added support and stability. Alternatively, you can build a basic stool that has a support bar and two ends.
- 2). Measure the wood according to the specific design you choose. The cross-leg design requires three pieces. The seat piece is 10 by 14 inches and each leg piece is cut at an angle. The bottom legs should be 20 1/8 inches wide with each foot measuring 2 1/8 inches. The legs should measure 15 inches, and they should be angled so the top of the legs are 11 1/2 inches above the base when measuring straight down.
- 3). Measure the pieces for the basic design. The top piece is 12 inches by 7 1/2 inches. The brace piece is 2 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. The two end pieces are 8 inches wide at the bottom and extend upward at an angle so that the bottom flares out. The height should be 5 inches. Each foot on the end pieces should measure 2 inches. Create a small arch going from one foot to the next that measures 4 inches.
- 4). Cut each piece of wood you measured using a table saw. Set those pieces aside. For the cross-leg design, measure 2 3/4 inches at the top center of one leg and at the bottom center of the other so they can connect. Do the same for the basic design, except measure the height of the brace bar and transfer this onto the side pieces. Cut the notches with a jigsaw.
- 5). Sand the edges of all pieces using a belt sander for a smooth finish.
- 6). Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes at each corner of the top piece so it will go directly into the legs.
- 7). Assemble the legs using the notches you cut out, and place the seat on top. Screw the seat to assemble it to the bottom pieces until the screws are secured completely. The head of each screw should be flush with the seat.
- 8). Flip the footstool upside down, and apply wood glue at each crease to secure the assembly further.
- 9). Drive two nails through the seat into the support base, and finish the footstool. Leave it natural or use a stain or paint for the completed look.
