Severe Pain

• In rare cases, the blood supply to the trapped stomach may be cut off, resulting in excruciating pain. This must be treated as a medical emergency, as death may result.
  
  

GERD

• Hiatal hernia often causes the esophagus's sphincter muscled to weaken, which leads to GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, where stomach acids and digestive enzymes flow uncontrollably into the esophagus, leading to a constant heartburn feeling.
