Motorcyclists and Accidents

Motorcycles can be great fun.
They can also be a great way to save money at the gas pump.
Every motorcyclist can tell you all the benefits of riding instead of driving.
There is no shortage of good reasons to ride, but there are also dangers.
Any avid motorcyclist can tell you about those as well.
One of the biggest dangers associated with riding a motorcycle is oncoming traffic at an intersection.
You find yourself riding your motorcycle, going through an intersection like any other.
One of the cars from the oncoming lane decides to make a left turn, but does not see you.
Half way through the turn, the car hits your motorcycle and you on it.
It is probably safe to say that this will not end well for you or your motorcycle.
It is estimated that motorcyclists are more than fourteen times more likely to be killed in a crash than a regular motorist.
This is because cars have so many safety features that simply cannot exist on a motorcycle.
Instead of seat belts, air bags, crumple zones and a large metal cage, motorcyclists have helmets and other riding gear.
Even if a motorcyclist is not killed in an accident, he or she is around three times more likely to be seriously injured.
Although oncoming traffic is one of the biggest dangers for motorcyclists, it is not the only one.
Motorcyclists riding in the normal flow of traffic may still not be seen, and could be hit just as easily.
One of the easiest ways for this to happen is for the motorcyclist to be riding in one of the many very large blind spots of an eighteen wheeler truck.
These trucks have terrible blind spots that can hide even the largest of cars.
Motorcyclists do not stand a chance in these areas.
If the trucker decides to change lanes into you, there is not much that you can do.
Unfortunately, motorcyclist insurance does not make medical coverage mandatory.
This is strange because motorcyclists are so much more likely to be injured.
Without medical coverage on your insurance, accidents can become even more difficult to deal with.
This is not something that anyone wants to, or should ever have to, deal with.
