The original purpose of Social Security numbers was to track income for the federal Social Security benefits program. However, the use of Social Security card numbers has expanded because of their usefulness as unique identification. Therefore, it is important to have your social security card. If you lose your card, you can get it replaced if you have the right documents. - You need an identifying document to apply for a replacement Social Security card. This can include a driver's license, non-driver's state ID card, a U.S. passport or a Certificate of Naturalization.
- You will need proof of your citizenship. Proof of citizenship can include a birth certificate, passport, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship or consular report of birth.
- If you are a legal alien, you will need proof from immigration of your work-authorized status.
- You are limited to three replacement Social Security cards in a calendar year, or ten total in your lifetime. To receive a replacement beyond this you will need to provide proof that the replacement card is necessary. If you are a legal alien without work-authorization, you must provide evidence that the card is required for non-work reasons.
- Fill out the application for a Social Security card. You can download an application from the Social Security website. The same document is used for new cards and replacements. Take the completed application and supporting documents to your local Social Security office.
