How to Get Ready for a Move

Moving is one of those tasks you have to prepare for weeks if not months ahead, especially if you have a big household.
It is very taxing and stressful, and it requires you to look into every detail, from acquiring permits to ensuring that important documents, memorable items and other essentials are secured.
Four Weeks Before the Move
  • Make a to-do list a month before moving.
List down the things you need for the big day, from the permits needed in your new place to the items you will be shipping out.
  • Notify your service providers, like snow removal companies, cable and internet, club memberships, among others, about your moving date.
You may also want to provide them with your new address should you want to continue subscribing to their services.
  • Arrange collections with your landlord about any advance or security deposits on rentals as the money can be used for your recollection expenses.
  • Clean out your closets and see if there is anything you can sell.
If you have not used something in the past year, put it on the selling block.
You can also donate these items to charities.
  • Determine which appliances and furniture are fit to be shipped out.
Consider the age of your items, and how well they will complement your new place.
Check if appliances like the refrigerator will fit in your new house.
    If they don't, sell them.
Two to Three Weeks Before the Move
  • Verify the date of your departure.
Contact utility companies and inform them that you will be discontinuing their services a day or two before your departure.
  • Clear your safety deposit box and determine if you want to bring them with you, or send them through insured mail.
  • Don't ship combustible materials like matches, cleaning fluids and oil-based paint.
A Week Before the Move
  • Keep track of your moving expenses by storing all moving-related records and receipts.
In Canada, you can claim these expenses on your income tax if you are relocating to a place farther than 40 kilometers.
  • Gather snacks, toys, books, and gadgets that would keep the children busy during the trip.
This is one detail that you should not overlook when thinking of how to get ready for a move.
  • Prepare a safety box that would keep all your kitchen and bathroom essentials, medication and first-aid items.
A set of tools like hammer, screwdrivers and pliers should also be handy.
The Day Before the Move
  • Supervise the packing crew in shipping out your items.
A packing crew often arrives a day before the big day.
  • Keep an eye on the fragile items.
    Label boxes properly.
  • Gather all the house keys and leave them with the new house owner.
Moving Day
  • Provide a floor plan of your new home so that the movers will know where to place your furniture and other things.
  • Check the condition of each household item as they are being unloaded from the trailer.
Keep track of missing or damaged items.
  • Unload your stuff and take them out of their boxes.
