Old Mustang Vs. New Mustang
- The original Ford Mustang was placed on a 108-inch wheelbase and measured 181.6 inches long, 68.2 inches wide and sold for less than $2,400.
- The post-2004 Mustangs possess similar dimensions to the original with a 107.1-inch wheelbase, and measuring 187.6 inches long, 74 inches wide and weighing 3,350 lbs. Base price is $20,995 as of October 2009.
- The first-generation Mustang was equipped with more than a dozen engine choices from 1964 to 1973, ranging from the base 170-cubic engine straight-six to the 428-ci Cobra Jet V-8.
- Engine choices are limited to the base 4-liter V-6, the 4.6-liter V-8 and the supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 capable of 540 horsepower.
- Retired race driver Carroll Shelby introduced the Shelby Cobra Mustang GT350 in 1965 and later the GT500 that featured high-performance V-8s, sports-tuned suspension and racing-style accents.
- Shelby returned to the Ford family in 2006 to help develop a series of new Mustang Cobras featuring a more muscular exterior and a supercharged V-8 with tuned suspension.
