How to Know If a Computer Is Infected With a Worm
- 1). Download and install an antivirus application. If you are put off by the price of the bigger names in antivirus (Norton and McAfee), there are numerous free options that preform just as well. Some of the more popular free offerings are Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Antivirus and Avast.
- 2). Launch the application. It is best if no other programs are running.
- 3). Select the option to update the application. This will ensure the program is up-to-date with all the most recent virus definitions.
- 4). Select a "Full System Scan" or "Deep Scan," depending on your application. This deeper scan takes a while longer, but is much more thorough.
- 5). Point the application to your C: drive as the scan destination and start the scan. Depending on the size of your hard drive, it may take up to a few hours to complete the scan.
- 6). Delete or quarantine any detected malicious software. Some applications handle this action differently, refer to the help files for specific instruction on how to delete detected worms.
