What is it about panic attacks that they can take over someone's whole life? After all, almost everyone openly acknowledges that they are unpleasant fictions of the mind? But if we know this why don't the symptoms disappear? These are the questions sufferers have lodged in their subconscious -we wonder why if we are so big and smart do we suffer from panic attacks? In many cases, panic and anxiety hang around in peoples' lives years before they have the need to deal with something that has come to dominate their behaviour.
Sufferers can often avoid the situations which trigger episodes, and live in a kind of denial about their condition.
Now I don't advise the opposite - to start wearing your condition like a name badge, but I do recommend acknowledgement before others that you are at least an 'occasional' sufferer of panic attacks.
I think it is best not to define yourself as a chronic sufferer, as this may increase the problem, but if a few people around you know about your personal trouble you may find more peace in that, and you couldfind your anxiety lessens with people around you aware of it.
Accept that it is a problem you are dealing with, and expect support from the good people around you.
Part of how to get over anxiety is this acceptance.
Those big questions at the top of this article can mean we demean ourselves as being irrational, hysterical beings, against those who are 'sane' or 'rational.
' This is not helpful or fair, and we must eradicate such thoughts when they arise Nothing is so forceful a fuel for anxiety as self-condemnation on top of a feeling of being out of control.
There lies a recipe for more panic.
Instead let yourself off the hook, remind yourself that we live in busy times, in a world with activities and pressures that have gotten out of kilter with our human needs for calm and peace.
Your stress reactions may be intense, but it doesn't mean you are at fault.
Your triggers could be around situations in your past that you had no control over.
