Dealing with the ‘Big Brother' effect - Fleet Tracking Solutions

101 19
Dealing with employee resistance to the installation of vehicle tracking, is a similar concept to how you would deal to any aspect of organisational change. An employee's resistance to change comes from their failure to see what good can come out of that change. If the employee can see no benefits, then the change will be resisted along with a reduction in job satisfaction.

So the question: How do you introduce a product which is looked upon a predominantly negative light and turn it into a positive for your business.

Motrak Fleet Monitoring work alongside businesses to help follow a process of introducing vehicle tracking to employees.

First the employee's views and opinions need to be heard.

Why is there negativity towards vehicle tracking?
  • Privacy - feel a part of their privacy is disappearing
  • Scrutiny - driving patterns and behaviours
  • Misunderstanding - tracking information will be automatically accepted without employees having an opportunity for input

The method of introducing employees to the implementation of vehicle tracking, starts with being completely transparent with them, what does the business want to achieve out of introducing the tracking system? Explain this to them.

The landscape group – Initial objective

‘The company had suffered a spate of vehicle thefts that had led to rapidly-rising insurance premiums. It also wanted to improve vehicle utilisation'

Explain all the benefits of vehicle tracking to the business such as; better fuel economy, vehicle safety, proof of attendance, Duty of Care etc.

One of the most important points to remember is; Be fair, set company wide standards, and reinforce the company's position that those doing their job honestly will not be penalised.

The above points may ease some of the negativity surrounding the implementation of vehicle tracking. But there may still be some resentment and resistance.

An effective method of helping customers deal with this resistance is to introduce driver incentives, such as best driver for the month. Create a leader board of the employees, updated monthly, looking at factors such as; harsh acceleration/braking, speeding and idling, make sure the drivers can see this so they know how they rank against other drivers. This improves job satisfaction through introducing competition between the drivers as well as improving driver behaviour.
