Boils are painful, tender, angry red lumps on your skin that rapidly fill with pus. If you've ever had one or more, you already know how important it is to seek immediate treatment for boils.

You will see boils growing larger and larger from their initial size of 1 to 2 centimeters to golf ball-sized, pus-filled lumps that eventually will rupture and drain. As a boil grows larger, you will also experience more pain and even fever.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span>Reasons Treatment is Necessary</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Knowing how to treat boils is essential, if only to stop the pain. Not doing so can lead to such complications as blood poisoning and the formation of MRSA, a penicillin-resistant bacteria that can be very difficult to treat.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Blood poisoning occurs when the bacteria from your untreated boils travel to other body parts, where it can affect normal functioning and lead to death. In fact, blood poisoning is a medical emergency, and you should treat it as such.

Also, don't be taken in by people who tell you that treatment for boils is unnecessary because boils will clear up completely in two weeks. Keep in mind that when you allow one boil to grow, it can grow one boil after another until you have them virtually all over your body.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

And don't dismiss carbuncles either - they are "superboils" whose effects are more than double the effect of a single boil. So as soon as you see one boil developing anywhere on your thigh, armpit and legs, get treatment immediately.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Risk Factors</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

It must be emphasized that anybody can develop boils, even if they are relatively healthy. For example, anyone's hair follicles can be infected by the boil-causing staph bacteria, which is also the cause of other serious diseases such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, meningitis and heart disease. It pays, therefore, to know of an effective treatment for boils in case any member of your household should develop them.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

You have higher chance than normal for developing boils if you:

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Have had close contact with a staph bacteria-infected person or a person with existing boils and-or carbuncles.</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Suffer from diabetes mellitus, which makes it more difficult for your immune system to fight off infection.</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Have other skin problems such as acne and dermatitis. </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Have an immune system that is compromised in any way.  </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Fortunately, modern science and alternative medicine have made it possible to know how to treat boils. And these ways are said to be very effective. The trick is in getting to the boil as early as possible and following the treatment protocol as strictly as possible.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

There is no reason you can't learn how to treat boils. Remedies abound.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

The treatment for boils will vary based on the severity of your skin condition. You can either adopt alternative herbal medicines, lifestyle remedies, or medical treatments. Or you can adopt all three for maximum results. Just be sure that the methods you adopt neither contraindicate each other nor compromise your efforts in any way. In short, take care that you treat your boils, not make them worse, or you will suffer more pain, not to mention the possibility of carrying the scars of boils for life.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Medical treatment: Your doctor will drain the boils, cover them with sterile gauze and perhaps prescribe oral antibiotics and topical applications if you have severe carbuncles. </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Lifestyle remedies: You can apply warm compresses to the affected areas and keep your clothes and hands clean when treating your boils. </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Herbal medicines: Many have had good luck with applying tea tree oil, for example, or a paste of onion and garlic, a paste of turmeric and black cumin seeds, and even boiled betel leaves. All have proved to be effective treatments for boils.  </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span></span>Diet: The right diet will purge toxins from your body. Think more citrus fruits, green vegetables and whole grain cereals while avoiding starchy and sugary foods. Indeed, your diet is often a good way to prevent boils. </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

The most effective treatment for boils often boils down to your knowledge of their causes and complications as well as your risk factors. After all, when you know your enemy, you can take steps to defeat it at its own game.
