Is Vinegar a Natural Rug Deodorizer?
- White vinegar will remove smells from your carpet. It will work to remove even tough urine or vomit smells. To use it, fill a spray bottle with one part white vinegar and one part water. Spray the white vinegar mixture over the area of the rug that smells bad. Don't soak the rug as this could wear out the carpet glue or cause the color to bleed through to the floor. Let the white vinegar dry completely.
- You can also make a paste with white vinegar to clean and deodorize carpets. To use it, mix 2 tbsp. white vinegar with ¼ cup salt or baking soda to make a thick paste that should be the same consistency as peanut butter. Spread the paste over areas on your rug that smells bad. Let the paste dry completely for several hours before vacuuming it up. Vacuum several times to ensure that all of the paste is gone.
- White vinegar has a potent smell that prevents some people from using it in their home cleaning solutions. This smell will appear very strong at first but will eventually dissipate. By the time the white vinegar spray or paste is dry, the smell will no longer be noticeable.
- While white vinegar will deodorize carpets, baking soda is traditionally used to remove odors from soft and porous surfaces such as rugs and carpets. Baking soda is another natural product that will actually absorb odors. To use it, sprinkle the rug with baking soda and let it sit overnight before vacuuming up the baking soda. Repeat the process if the smell is still noticeable.
