Hypersomnolence is a condition that causes a person to sleep too much.
It doesn't sound like a bad thing, but normally, a person only needs to get 8-10 hours of slumber each night.
Anyone who sleeps more than that, naps often but still feels tired during the day is already called a hypersomniac.
The disorder needs to be treated since it can significantly affect a person's productivity and safety.
Just like with any other sleep disorders, Hypersomnolence or hypersomnia can be lessened by effecting the following changes in your lifestyle.
Improve Sleep Quality Getting a proper quantity and quality of sleep has always been the focal point in treating any sleep disorders.
In order to enhance sleeping, you should always sleep in a quiet, darkened environment.
Bright lights are a stimulant, so it is best to keep the lights dim.
Maintain a cool temperature in the bedroom too since it is more conducive for sleeping.
Follow a consistent sleep schedule, so your body will know when to rest.
You should go to bed only when it's already time for sleeping.
Do not use the bed for any other activities, such as when watching TV or talking on the phone.
You could also do some relaxation activities before going to bed, like reading, taking a warm bath, or drinking warm milk.
Other relaxation techniques like biofeedback devices, aromatherapy and sound therapy can also help your mind transition from your hectic life into a quiet sleep.
Exercise Regularly.
Exercise more often for 20 to 30 minutes per day.
It energizes your body and keeps it less tired during the day.
It can also promote quality sleep at night.
You can go bike-riding, walking or simply go to a gym.
You should keep in mind, however, that exercise should be done at daytime.
Exercising a few hours before bedtime can keep you awake and will interfere with your sleeping.
Avoid Caffeine, Nicotine and Alcohol.
You should stay away from drinks that contain caffeine a few hours before going to bed.
This includes chocolate, coffee, soft drinks, non-herbal teas, diet drugs and specific pain relievers.
They are stimulants that can keep you from falling asleep when you need to.
Cigarettes contain nicotine which is another stimulant.
It causes you to sleep very lightly and wake up early in the morning.
Alcohol, meanwhile, is a depressant.
It keeps a person from achieving a deep and restful sleep.
Avoid Activities that delay bedtime.
Do not work in nighttime jobs or go on a night-out.
They can delay your bedtime and throw off your sleep to wake pattern.
There is no doubt how important getting enough quality sleep is to one's life.
However, information on how to maintain a healthy sleeping routine are not taught to people often enough, especially the teenagers and young adults.
Aside from not being able to carry out daily activities, too much sleeping can also lead to a variety of medical problems.
This includes diabetes, obesity, headaches, back pain, depression and others.
We must therefore find ways to make sure our body gets the right amount of sleep it deserves, neither too much and neither too little.
