How to Install Tiles Using Mud
- 1). Attach tar paper across the floor surface using a staple gun. This is the moisture barrier for the mud bed.
- 2). Connect 2.5-gauge wire mesh to the surface with a nail gun and 1-inch galvanized roofing nails. The wire mesh goes right over the tar paper, and each seam overlaps by an inch.
- 3). Pour water into the mud, which is actually ceramic floor mix mortar. Start with small amounts of water and mix with a trowel. The final consistency is complete when you can pick up the mud and squeeze it with the piece staying together nicely.
- 4). Cover the floor with the mud, starting at the far side of the room and moving toward the exit. The mud bed must be at least ¾ inch thick.
- 5). Pack the mud bed using a 2-by-6-by-9 piece of wood. Use a level to make sure the mud is was packed evenly.
- 6). Let the mud dry for 24 hours.
- 7). Lay thinset mortar using a notched trowel once the mud bed is dry.
- 8). Place the tiles on top of the thinset mortar and push them into place.
- 9). Cover the tiles with grout and a grout float to fill in the joints between the tiles. Clean up with a damp cloth.
