We find more or less similar situation in the previous ages also. The Victorian Era was the time of urbanization and social change; therefore, there were several ladies with independent thought. But, still their lives were not as easier as they were for the ladies living in the home. The writings of Tennyson perfectly described the situation of the females perfectly. In his writings, we find the women staying with their needles whereas men with their swords. Despite, it will be wrong if we generalize this fact. The Victorian Age was a large time span of 64 years, in which a lot of change was witnessed in the scenarios. The change in the life of Queen Victoria can be the best example in this regard.

Still faithfulness was supposed to be mandatory quality of the women. Several men used to keep the mistresses, but the restrictions were there. If some female had the lover, making it public was accepted as an evil. If she did so, she was cut from the society.

The circumstances of the ladies were also dependent on the class of family. Economically, high-class ladies used to wear better life as compared to the low-class. We can again take Queen Victoria as an instance. The wives of the wealthy husbands used to spend their lives in weaving, reading, writing letters, looking on the servants, and so on.

Apart from the household wives, there were the females at the Victorian Era, who challenged the taboos. The name of the famous writer Isabella Bird can be taken in this regard. It cannot be forgotten that a lot of social changes were already faced by the society in the medieval age, which came before the Victorian periods. So, we see the better position of the ladies in that time span.

On the arrival of the modern ages, Hollywood movies and many sitcoms represented the era of Queen Victoria. A lot of science fiction novels written in the scenario of that era became the theme of these movies. Such concept was termed as ‘steampunk'.  The steampunk was very much based on the fantasies, so the situation of the punk females was much better as compared to the Victorian time. 

Another aspect of the lifestyle of the ladies in the era of Queen Victoria was their dress sense. They used to wear the flamboyant dresses during that period, which have become the inspiration for the modern-age fashion also. On the other hand, we see the modified versions of these outfits in the steampunk. These outfits have provided a new outlook to the fashion industry.
