In this age of ever-increasing data and the need to store data in various domains and tools, migrating data from one platform to another has become a typical process and may begin to occur more frequently. What areas should be considered during data migration? From an organizational perspective, the migration of data could be an enormous task as there are many areas where data is stored and needed. Here are some of the different facets of information storage within an organization's data stream that may be considered during data migration projects.

€ Documents: These are usually the largest subset of data and information contained in an organization. This can include the different folders and files on individual or shared drives. Documents could also be of various sizes and may require the largest amount of dedicated storage space.

€ Email: After document and folder concerns have been handled, email storage considerations should also be made. Various migrating tools have different features which may include the preservation of various settings like read or unread statuses, attachments, rules, priority, date ranges, categories, email folders, size of email messages, signatures, account delegates and other related features. As features get transferred from one platform to another, formatting and appearance may change. For instance, a message with a high priority or in folders in a certain platform could be converted to starred messages and labels in Google apps. There may also be filters on certain features. For instances, during data migration, executable files may be filtered out. In some situations email attachments may be included. Hence, it is important to confirm what features are included.

€ Tasks, Meetings, Appointments and Calendars: Information contained in the tasks, meetings, appointments and calendars of one platform may also need to be migrated to the new platform. If this is the case, it is important to ensure that the various individual components are correctly mapped to the new platform's associated features. This includes attendees, shared calendar rights and privileges and reminders.

€ Contacts and Address Books: A person's list of contacts could contain names of clients and colleagues and this can be very important. Ensuring that is migrated correctly to the new platform is critical. Data migration technicians should consider the possibility of migrating multiple contact lists or many address books. Contacts and addresses may also be categorized or grouped and maintaining such configurations could be challenging for some data platforms.

Moving data from one platform to another is usually not a simple task. There different types of data migration tools and resources available to assist in the migration process including cloud technologies applications. Such technologies and platforms to be migrated could involve lotus notes and domino migration. Migration tools could also offer advantages and perks such as minimal downtown during data migration. Data migration speed, resource usage, system reporting, transfer of attachments and rights delegation could also be features that separate one data migration tool from other tools. Supported features that provide sustainable data migration in a way that is safe and complete will be preferred and in demand.
