    Centerhold Technique

    • 1). Open the compass by raising the thumb loop and completely folding open the cover so that the base and cover are completely flat.

    • 2). Raise the rear sight until it is perpendicular with the base.

    • 3). Hold the compass in one hand with the thumb inside the thumb loop and the index finger along the side of the base. Support the compass by folding the remaining fingers under the compass. Cup the hand holding the compass with the other hand, keeping the elbows next to the side of the body.

    • 4). Rotate your body towards the object until you are facing the object.

    • 5). Read the azimuth on the compass. The azimuth (direction to an object in degrees or mills) is indicated by the numbered tic marks underneath the fixed index line at the top of the compass face.

    Cheekhold Technique

    • 1). Open the compass by raising the thumb loop and completely folding open the cover so that the base and cover are completely flat.

    • 2). Raise the rear sight perpendicular with the base.

    • 3). Raise the cover perpendicular with the base.

    • 4). Lower the rear sight so that it forms an approximately 45 degree angle with the base.

    • 5). Hold the compass in one hand with the thumb inside the thumb loop and the index finger along the side of the base. Support the compass by folding the remaining fingers under the compass. Cup the hand holding the compass with the other hand keeping the elbows next to the side of the body.
