Preventing Juvenile Delinquency: How Families Can Help

Parenting isn't exactly easy. Parents have to succeed in maintaining their work-life balance, and even though they want to spend every waking hour caring for their child, it isn't exactly feasible. Once a child hits puberty, things go even worse. See, teenagers are in the midst of a crisis of identity and they want to find out who they are sans interference. Parents, on the other hand, want nothing more than to keep tabs on their child during this difficult time.

Seeing as how adults all went through the same stage, one would assume that parents would be able to understand. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Most parents seem to forget how it was for them when they we teenagers, or they just wave away the fact with "it was different then". This lack of empathy for what a child is going through during puberty can only make things worse and bring the teenager further away from the parents.

But it wouldn't be right to blame the parents for this. There are a lot of differences in today's teens that they don't understand, thinking that it's now completely alien to them. In reality, teens are teens, and though fads may change, at their core they're still confused kids. Parents just want what's best for their children, but then they don't realise that their teenagers are now beyond the usual "obey at all costs" requirement that they put up with as little children.

it's important that parents take on a different approach, if they want to succeed in getting through to their children. Teens tend to be moody, and you have to realise that taking brass tacks and becoming too authoritative will only lead them to be more rebellious. Teenagers need to be respected, too, and though you don't want to be too laid-back and just chums, you need to realise that your teen is now ready to be treated as someone bordering on a adulthood, not a toddler.

Just treat your teens like you'd want to be treated. You know they maybe young, but they're starting to develop their identities and they don't just follow orders blindly anymore. Teens want to know who they are, they want to be unique and individual. They don't want to be your yes man or a parrot. It's best to give teens space to explore and find out who they are rather than just accepting what the authority figures in their lives tell them to do. It's a part of growing up.

But juvenile delinquency remains a serious problem. How can a family avoid this threat? The truth is that a family that's really close and has open communications would be less likely to have the teens fall into delinquency. You don't want to be controlling, but you have to show your teen that you're there to listen and to support. This means that communication is highly important. Don't be overly dramatic or too controlling, but tell your teen just how willing you are to support them and that you'll be there no matter what happens.

When we say communication, it isn't always just about the words, you know. Your physical presence, time spent with the family €" these bonding moments should help give your teen a sense of love and protection. It's almost a given that your teen will act like he or she is above it all and finds sap corny, but family support is something they need and crave.

If you really want to have some family time, you need to get out of the city and leave your work behind. It can be an occasional thing, or a special reward for your kids' good behaviours.
